Houston gun violence incidents reports from 1998

Following is a list of the gun violence incidents (deaths & injuries) that occurred in the Houston area in 1998. Handguns may make people feel safer, but they unleash incredible violence in our community. The rest of the developed world has figured out how to make people safe without handguns. As a result, they have very few gun deaths and injuries each year, unlike the list that follows.

December 1998

Eric D. Wiltz, 32, of the 12600 block of Brookglade was shot to death during a holdup in a northeast Houston motel room. 12/3

Orenthus Lee Norman, 21, was shot to death at his boarding house in the 25th block of Stuart. Police later arrested Craig Anthony Powell, 19, for this murder. 12/4

James White was shot in the head during an apparent robbery and died later at Ben Taub Hospital. Geno Capoletti Wilson, 17, was jailed without bond for this murder. 12/5

Tuyen Hoang Thang Nguyen, 19, was shot in his car in the 7500 block of Bellaire. He later died at Ben Taub Hospital. 12/5

Salvador Ramirez, 27, and Veronica Ramirez, 17, were found shot to death at a residence in the 1200 block of Marleen. Police believe Salvador Ramirez killed his niece, then himself. 12/7

One man was shot to death, two others wounded, and a seventeen-year-old girl abducted in what may have been a drug deal in southwest Houston. Terrance Dwayne Gibson, 22, was shot to death, Kevin Velectus Walter, 24, was listed in critical condition and Dion Dwayne Holley, 17, was in fair condition. Mary Carmouche, 17, was later found shot to death outside a southwest Houston home. Police later arrested Charles H. Mamou, 24, of Louisiana for the deaths. 12/8

Victor Jarrod Jackson, 31, was shot and killed as he stood with a friend at a street corner in southeast Houston. 12/14

Jose Dolores Moreno, 31, was shot to death during a fight outside a northwest Houston cantina on 10239 Tanner. 12/14

Three boys discovered the body of a man in the 5400 block of Rand. Authorities believe the unidentified man, who appeared to be in his twenties, had been shot. 12/14

Travis Brown III, 24, and Daniel Hibbard, 31, were shot to death in the house where they lived in the 5800 block of Maywood. Melanie Almagauer, 15, who also stayed there was wounded. Police later arrested Milton Wunzuel Mathis, 19, and charged him with Capital Murder. Police believe the motive for the shootings was robbery. 12/16

Hector DeValle Perez, 38, was shot and killed in his home in the 3000 block of Walnut. Fritz Baltes Pares, 39, was also shot and listed in critical condition. 12/16

Mark Escoffie, 27, of 12600 Memorial was shot and killed in the parking lot of a southwest Houston hotel. Escoffie was getting out of his car when another vehicle pulled up; a woman got out and started talking to him. A few minutes later a man got out of the car and shot Escoffie in the chest and leg. 12/20

Dannie Gonzalez, 21, and Louie Marnejo, 18, were shot and killed by Donnie Galvan as they attempted to rob Galvan’s Jewelry store at 1309 East Southmore. Two other suspects got away. 12/24

One man died and four people were wounded as gunfire erupted during a soccer match. Armando Carpio, 31, was shot and killed, Janelle Medina, 9, shot in the chest, Dionne Plumber, 9, shot in the leg, Heriberto Vasquez, 20, shot twice in the hip, and Rene Medina, 37, shot in the leg. Anthony Deronne Jackson, 37, has been charged with the murders but remains at large. 12/28

Cassandra Sonier, 32, was shot and killed by her estranged husband, Winfred Jerome Johnson, 36. Sonier was shot in her car in front of her house in the 2600 block of Camden Parkway. 12/27

Modesto Ocasio, 42, shot himself in the chest while talking to his wife on apayphone in the 1900 block of Scott Street. He died a short time later at Ben Taub Hospital. Police say he’d been depressed because his wife filed for divorce. 12/29

Ygnacio Maldonado, 19, was shot and killed and his companion Jenny Dolores Hernandez, 26, seriously wounded when a man approached with a shotgun and demanded their car. They were attempting to comply when they were shot. 12/29

Three people found shot to death in their southwest Houston townhome were identified as Brian Neblett, 22, Stephanie Evon Edison, 24, and Kara Neblett, 4, of the 10000 block of Westpark. Police say there was no sign of forced entry. 12/31

Jesus Cruz Macias, 28, was fatally shot in the chest in an apparent accidental shooting at a southwest Houston club. Macias went to the nightclub to ask Baldo Angel Matias about getting a job with the same Security Company employing Matias. Matias told police he took off his gunbelt to show Macias when the gun discharged and shot Macias in the chest. 12/31

Brian Keith Allison, 24, of the 17600 block of Wayforest was shot and killed in a robbery attempt. Allison refused to give his money to the armed man who shot him in the back as he tried to flee. 1/99

John Lee Jenkins, 23, of the 1100 block of McIlhenny was found slumped over the steering wheel of his Blazer. He had been shot in the head and chest and was dead at the scene. 1/99

A 38-year-old man was found shot to death New Year’s Eve in the middle of a northeast Houston Street. He was later identified as David Trevino. 1/99

November 1998

Four men have been charged with capital murder in the shooting of a man during an apparent robbery in the 100 block of Julia. Another man was wounded, both are still unidentified. 11/2

A man was shot and killed by another man who was chasing him on foot in the10100 block of Forum Park West. Police later identified the victim as Gregory Montgomery, 25. 11/3

Andres Gomez was shot and killed by three men armed with rifles while he was playing handball in a park in the 9400 block of Summerbell. Another man in the park was wounded. 11/4

Ramiro Rosas, 25, of the 8300 block of Hitchcock was shot and killed at a Texaco Service Station in the 2500 block of the North Freeway. Homicide investigators believe Rosas was the victim of a carjacking. 11/7

Jesus Rodriguez Villela, 31, of 3500 Russell was shot and killed after a dispute with another man in Southeast Houston. 11/12

Leticia Williams, 19, was critically wounded during a robbery attempt in her Southwest apartment in the 8700 block of Gustine. Two gunmen walked through an unlocked door and demanded money, then shot Williams in the chest. 11/13

A man having an affair with a married woman was shot to death. Miguel Angel Manzanita, 26, was slain at the couple’s apartment. The woman, Maricela Arrequin, 23, was shot in the legs. Charges are pending against her husband. 11/14

Juan Antonio Alarcon, 21, has been charged with murder in the shooting of Jose Lasereo Fernandez, 44. Deputies said the two had an argument over repairs to the suspect’s car. 11/16

Jose Mejia Sanchez, 29, was shot and killed while trying to break into a car at a Northwest Houston apartment complex. A resident yelled at Sanchez and his accomplice, Sanchez pointed a gun at the man, who then fired his 9mm pistol five times, striking Sanchez in the face. 11/19

Stanley W. Mott III, 35, was found shot to death in the 1300 block of East 28th. Police have not determined a motive in the slaying. 11/22

A Pasadena homeowner shot and killed a man who walked into his home in the 3300 block of Suiterway. The dead man was later identified as Juan Roberto Rodriguez, 27. 11/23

Altarisha Humphrey, 21, died of gunshot wounds she received while exchanging gunfire with intruders in her friend’s home in Southeast Houston. 11/23

Police are looking for two men who accompanied a third man into a small park in Southwest Houston where he was shot to death. Witnesses heard gunfire and saw two men flee in a gray car. 11/24

An armored-truck service courier was shot and critically wounded by two men who robbed him of cash he was delivering to a store on South Shaver. The guard, Kevin Randall, 23, was listed in fair condition at Ben Taub Hospital. 11/28

Tremaine Devar Cherry, 19, was shot and killed by a man with a shotgun after Cherry got out of a car at a Southwest Houston service station. 11/29

Tuyen Hoang Thanh Nguyen, 19, was found shot in his car in the 7500 block of Bellaire. He later died at Ben Taub Hospital. 11/29

Randolph Conn, 37, was shot and wounded by police after they responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at his home in Southeast Houston. Police said Conn was shot when he reached for a pistol. 11/29

Cedrick Cash was shot and stabbed after an altercation with four other men outside a Northwest Houston Apartment complex. Cash later died at Ben Taub Hospital. 11/30

October 1998

We tabulate these tragic events and report them to decision makers in the hope and spirit that the report will help them make better decisions in reducing crime and violence.

Willie Marvin Spencer, 29, of the 5900 block of Spencer was found wrapped in a blanket in his van. He had been shot to death. 10/2

Olvin Sanchez Mejia, 16, was shot in the stomach while walking with a friend in the 6200 block of Alder. Police suspect gang members. 10/2

A man was shot to death outside an apartment in the 7300 block of North Wayside by his girlfriend’s former boyfriend. No names have been released. 10/3

Stephanie Rhyne, 35, of the 1600 block of White star Drive was shot by a police officer when she refused to put down her gun, then pointed it at the officer. Police were called to Rhyne’s house for an apparent suicide attempt. Rhyne later died at Ben Taub Hospital. 10/4

Blanca Gutierrez, 21, of the 6700 block of Belarbor was shot during a robbery attempt while she was using an ATM machine. she was killed one day before her birthday. 10/4

A man killed during a domestic dispute at his home has been identified as Jessie Floyd Carrington, 53, of 7373 N. Wayside. Murder charges were filed against Allen Nichols, 71. 10/4

Nicole Estelle Green, 27, was charged in the death of Deon Earl Williams, 22, of 12900 Greenway Chase. Green pulled a pistol and shot Williams in the chest after a confrontation in the parking lot of a club. 10/4

Walter Lee Harkless, 36, was shot to death outside a club in the 6300 block of Windswept Lane. Harkless was employed as a security guard at the club.10/6

A Northwest Harris County convenience store clerk, Yusuf Shaikh, 51, died after being shot in the head during a robbery. 10/6

An unidentified man, shot several times, was found at an apartment complex in the 5500 block of Gasmer. He was pronounced dead at Ben Taub Hospital. 10/6

Hiram Lopez, 21 of 11106 Cora was shot several times outside his house after a dispute with an acquaintance. Pedro Albert Flores is being charged with his murder. 10/7

The mother of a ten-year-old girl accidentally shot the child in the foot while arguing with the girl’s father. The mother was in custody and was expected to be charged with injury to a child. 10/8

Sheriff’s deputies were investigating the shooting death of a man in Northwest Harris County. The man, whose name was not released, was shot in the chest. 10/8

Roderick Johnson is charged in the shooting death of Deon Patrick Jones, 31, of Sugarland. Jones was shot after he became involved in a dispute with Johnson and a woman. 10/11

Timothy Mullins, 21, died of a gunshot wound while attending a drinking party in Northwest Houston. Charles Allen Leaghton, 19, has been charged with manslaughter. 10/14

A fifteen-year-old boy was shot in the head in Northwest Harris County during an apparent traffic altercation when the occupants of the other car opened fire. The fifteen-year-old remains in critical condition. 10/15

Kendric Davenport, 23, was shot and killed by the convenience store clerk he tried to rob in Northeast Harris County. 10/17

A homeless man was shot and wounded when a Northeast Houston homeowner found him in his shower. Melvin Brinkley, 21, was listed in good condition. 10/18

Two men, Hector Javier Hernandez, 18, and Felix Santos Torres, 19, were shot to death in Southwest Houston after what appeared to be a traffic altercation. The two gunmen fled from the scene. 10/22

A man was shot to death in Northeast Houston when two people approached him and his companions in a parking lot and opened fire on them. The man’s identity is not known. 10/24

Peggy Lynn Howard, 25, was fatally shot twice in the face at her Southwest Houston condominium complex. Howard was on her way to dump a bag of garbage before taking her daughter to school. Her six-year-old daughter witnessed the shooting. 10/26

September 1998

Following is Texans Against Gun Violence/Houston’s comment and tabulation of deaths by gunshots in the Houston area for September, 1998. (Basis reports in the Houston Chronicle.)

Twenty-seven separate incidents involving guns resulted in deaths or serious injuries occurred in September in the Houston area. Of these:
(1) eight deaths and one injury had unknown causes although one appeared to be suicide and two other of the eight deaths may have been related to gang activity or drug dealing; (2) two minors were accidentally shot when a gun discharged at a high school; (3) one death and one injury occurred in self defense; (4) one death was drug related; (5) three injuries and one death were clearly gang related: (6) nine shooting incidents—seven deaths and two injuries—followed heated arguments, the causes of which are unknown; and, finally, robbery was the apparent cause of four deaths and one injury. As in months since May 1998, the majority of provided names of both victims and perpetrators are of Hispanic origin. (Note that the number of incidents is less than the actual number of deaths and the number of injuries.)

Tabulation of the incidents:

A sixteen-year-old North Shore High School student was accused of two felonies after a Derringer in his pocket accidentally fired into the floor, slightly injuring two classmates. The student's names were withheld because they are minors. 9/1

A Southwest Houston couple was found dead in their home in the 6200 block of Jason. Police believe that the man, James Burke shot his wife Helen, then himself. 9/4

Passers-by discovered the body of Macario Sanchez Salazar, 47, near the railroad tracks off the 8200 block of Liberty Road. Police said it appeared Sanchez had been shot. 9/2

Filadelfo Uriostegui, 29, of the 2900 block of Longpoint was found shot to death on a driveway in the 1500 block of Oak Tree. 9/5

Samuel Wingo, 68, of the 7800 block of Hanna was shot to death in his home. Police say there were no signs of forced entry. 9/5

Juan R, Carrasco, 18, of 10000 Muscatine was shot to death in a convenience store parking lot in Southeast Houston. The gunman got out of a vehicle, argued with Carrasco, shot him, then fled. 9/6

Joel Esparza, 35, of the 10200 block of Sageplum Drive was shot to death and his car stolen in an apparent carjacking in Southeast Houston. Esparza was driving to work. His body was found in the street. 9/7

A trio of men approached Anthony Williams, 27, of the 14300 block of Castle Ridge, an argument ensued and Williams was shot in the back. He died later during surgery. 9/7

David Vasquez, 18, was charged with the shooting death of Marisela Thompson, 22. Vasquez became belligerent while at a party hosted by Thompson and began shooting. 9/8

Shots fired from a passing car wounded two teenagers playing outside their Southeast Harris County apartment complex. It is not known if the shooting was gang related. 9/9

A man shot his ex-wife, dragged her into a neighbor's apartment and barricaded himself in. The swat team was called in; no further details were available. 9/9

Her husband, Jose Angel Reyna, shot Ana Maria Vitorino Rodriguez, 26, of the 5400 block of Pate to death in her car. Her three-year-old son, also in the car, was treated for a hand wound. She had three other children. 9/9

Richard Aleem, 20, of the 12200 block of Fondren was shot to death when he answered a knock at the door and three armed men burst in demanding money and jewelry. His wife was also shot, but was reported in good condition. 9/12

The body of Frangila Gomez, 23, was found outside a warehouse in the 7700 block of Blankenship. He had been shot once. 9/13

Patrice Rae White, 25, was found shot to death at the bottom of a stairwell at her Southwest Houston apartment complex. 9/15

A 23 year old woman, Stephanie Wiley, shot and killed her common law husband, Kenneth Willford, 34, then critically wounded herself during an argument at their trailer home in the 6000 block of Reddell. 9/15

Two teenagers were shot and wounded in a gang-related incident in Northeast Houston. Lance Richardson, 18, was shot in the back of the head, and William Atkins, 16, was shot in the leg. Richardson remains in critical condition. 9/20 A shooting
at his birthday party left Roger Longoria, 19 dead, and his brother, Robert Longoria wounded. The shooting happened in the 9200 block of Nathanial when three men drove up in a four runner and opened fire on the brothers. The identity of one of the suspects is known. 9/21

Oscar Ernesto Maroquin Perez, 30, was shot to death during a dispute with another man at a Southwest Houston apartment complex. Police are searching for Angel Sotelo Quintana who will be charged with murder. 9/23

A man shot to death during an apparent robbery has been identified as Willis Douglas Campbell, 40, of the 9200 block of Compton. Campbell was discovered near railroad tracks off the 4200 block of Gillespie. 9/26

A man died after being shot while apparently burglarizing a Northeast Houston home. Police say the homeowner returned to find the man inside. They struggled over a handgun and the man was shot. 9/26

Eva Garcia, 37, was shot and killed outside North Harris County lounge by a security guard. James South, who was with her, was wounded in the leg. Garcia had been involved in a dispute with another woman earlier in the evening. When the other woman returned with the security guard, South got out of the car and aimed a rifle at the security guard who opened fire. 9/27

Pedro Marquez, 19, and Andrew Zamudio, 24, were shot in the parking lot of a Southeast Houston lounge by a man they had been arguing with. Marquez died at the scene and Zamudio was in fair condition. 9/27

Michael Eakin, a Harris County Deputy was shot and killed by Michael Anthony Lopez when Eakin pulled the car over that Lopez was in for a routine traffic stop. 9/30

Benjamin Cisneros, 19, was found shot to death in his home in the 11700 block of Art. Two men in dark clothes broke in and shot him. Cisneros was known to engage in illegal narcotics activity. 9/30

August 1998

Here are the deaths and serious injuries in the Houston area in August 1998. Basis is reports in the Houston Chronicle.

Note that nine (9) of the twenty-nine (29) reported incidents clearly are family/personal relations related.

A mother of five, Vern Allison, 41, was shot to death by her live in boyfriend after an argument at her home in the 11600 block of Braewick. After shooting Ms. Allison, Willie Denton then critically wounded himself. 8/1

Mahood Teheri, 44, was shot in the head during a robbery at a service station in North Houston. He was listed in critical condition. 8/2

Jose Santos Fuentes, 22, a suspect in a robbery was shot to death in the 5400 block of Renwick. 8/3

Alcio Richmond, 59, was fatally shot at close range with a shotgun while he sat in his car outside his home in the 4500 block of Alvin. 8/3

Peter Rogers, 35, of 8910 North Inwood Drive was shot and killed in his home by his wife, Karen Marie Rogers following an argument. 8/3

Joseph Hernandez, 18, was seriously wounded when he and two friends were involved in a drive by shooting in the 1600 block of Thompson. 8/8

Hector Gonzalez, 27, was shot and killed following an argument in Southwest Houston. 8/11

Omar Santana, 23, was shot to death outside a Northwest Houston Club. His 15-year-old female companion was wounded. 8/11

Deborah Odell, 49, was shot and killed by her husband, John Gonzales. Police had been called to their home just prior to the shooting to settle a dispute. The couple told them they had not been arguing. Gonzales shot his wife less than two hours later. 8/14

Kirk Hoque, 40, was charged with the murder of Ricky Don Gilbreath 39. They had been feuding over the women Gilbreath was dating. 8/16

Richard Lee Myers Jr., 40, of Conroe committed suicide after refusing to surrender to police after kidnapping and threatening to kill his estranged wife, Pennie Myers. 8/17

Olivia Bustos Hernandez, 25, and her son Edgar, 7, were shot when they returned home from a party and were talking to others outside their apartment in the 2500 block of Betty. A driver of a truck shot into the crowd. 8/17

Luis Antonio Borrero Rivera, 46, was shot and killed after a dispute with several other men at a club in Southeast Houston. 8/18

Ken Caballera, 21, a teller at a Southwest Houston bank, was critically wounded when a robber apparently panicked while holding up the bank. Harvey Smith, a security guard was also shot. 8/19

Leonard Ray Ceaser, 29, died from gunshot wounds to the head while putting gas in his car at a Southeast Houston service station. His friend Moses Kuykendahl, 17, was also wounded. 8/22

Dung Van Ha, 19, was shot and killed while sitting in his car at an intersection in West Houston. Ha's brother, and another passenger, Dao Minh Van were also hit. The shooting was unprovoked. Ha was to begin classes at U of H this semester. 8/22

Gene Hanson, 38, killed his ex-girlfriends' boyfriend, Tim Twain Gooch, 32, then killed himself. Hanson had stalked the couple at her residence in the11600 block of Zarroll. 8/25

The body of 16-year-old Domingo Pacheco was found by the riverbank near the 2000 block of Avenue A. He had multiple gunshot wounds to the head. Police are seeking information on this crime. 8/25

Paul Donaldson, 20, was beaten and shot as he walked form his car at his apartment complex in the 5300 block of Desoto. Police believe it was an attempted robbery. 8/25

One man was killed and another wounded when men in another car during a chase in Southeast Houston fired upon the pick-up they were in. 8/26

Johnny Gallegos, 31, shot and killed his wife Renee, 29, outside their home in Northwest Houston. The couple had been arguing. 8/27

Raphael Mendoza, 21, was shot and killed during a shootout in Southeast Houston. Juan Saenz, 20, was also wounded. 8/27

Jeffrey Frantz, 55, and his wife Martha, 47, were shot while they slept in their home in the 11400 block of Colonial Drive Trail. Jeffrey Frantz died at the scene. His wife was listed in good condition. Their 25-year-old son, who was home at the time, believes it was a home invasion. 8/30

Anselmo Delacruz, 41, was shot to death by 2 occupants of another car during a high-speed chase in West Houston. 8/30

A man was listed in critical condition after being shot at a North Houston bus stop. 8/31

Rodolfo Lizama 16, was killed when a gun his friend was handling discharged accidentally. Lizama was visiting a friend in the 1000 bock of South Wayside. Charges of criminally negligent homicide are pending. 8/31

Juan Rodriguez died after being shot outside a South Houston club. 8/31

Hai Dang, 21, shot and wounded 3 people in another car after they threw coins in his face. Omar Romero, Rudolfo Gutierrez and a juvenile frienwere wounded. 8/31

Jacob Gonzales, 15, was shot and killed in an apparent drive-by shooting in the 3100 block of Bertrand. His brother Eugene, 17, and a 19-year-old friend were wounded. 8/31

June & July 1998

There were forty-nine separate reported incidents of death or serious injury by gunshots in the greater Houston area in the months of June and July 1998. Incidents are on the basis of reports in the Houston Chronicle.

Forty-two people died of gun shot wounds.

Twenty-eight (28) of the serious injuries or deaths occurred in June and twenty-one (21) in July.

Of these:
(1) the motive for eight deaths, one injury and one attempted homicide was not known;

(2) the cause of six of the gun deaths and one injury was described as accidental;

(3) three gun deaths appear to have been drug-related;

(4) sixteen deaths and six injuries could be described as crimes of passion (anger, jealousy, etc.); six deaths and three injuries were attempted robberies;

(5) three of the gun deaths appear to be drug-related;

(6) two shootings were by police in self-defense and resulted in one death and one injury (the shooting that resulted in an injury was also an attempted suicide); and

(7) one death was due to suicide and another attempted suicide resulted in a critical injury when a 37-year old woman turned the gun she was holding pointed to her head towards a policeman who then shot in self defense. Twenty-eight of the victims (approximately 57 percent) had Hispanic surnames. Locations where the separate shootings took place were scattered throughout the Houston Metropolitan area, with one incident in nearby Waller, Texas.

January-May l998

Eliel Delgado Lopez, 30, was shot to death after an argument with a boyhood friend. The shooting happened in the 1200 block of Birdsall in southwest Houston. 1/1

A 21-year-old man was shot to death by two men who demanded his jewelry and car keys. 1/1

Jamichael Nelson, 23, was found shot to death in front of an apartment complex in the 12200 block of Fleming in northeast Houston. 1/1

An unidentified man was found shot to death in a car parked in the 6200 block of Briar Rose in west Houston. 1/1

Dwight Jones, 21, was shot to death while at work. He was a clerk at First Choice Music and Communications in the 6600 block of West Fuqua in southwest Houston. Police said the motive was probably a robbery although nothing was missing from the store. Two killings happened here on the first day of l997, and four on the first day of l996. 1/1

Michael Severino, 36, died after he was shot at least four times by Sabine County Sheriff Tom Phillips, who said Severino shot at him with to draw fire from the sheriff. Severino had removed the pellets from the shotgun before firing at the sheriff. 1/2

Eric Bridgeford, 23, was shot and killed at his home when he confronted an intruder who had abducted and assaulted Bridgeport’s sister. Police believe the suspect may still be driving a Ford Ranger pickup he stole – Texas license plate UM8917. 1/4

A man was found shot to death in a mobile home near downtown, in the 4500 block of Travis. 1/12

Eduardo Urbina Huerta, 30, was shot to death near his northeast Houston home when he tried to flee from a gunman demanding money from him and a companion. 1/19

Vondre R. Johnson was shot to death at his home after apparently surprising a pair of burglars. Johnson lived in the 2500 block of Barbie. 1/19

A nightclub patron was shot to death and the security guard who shot him was wounded during an altercation in a nightclub in the 9800 block of Airline. The man shot by the guard died at Parkway Hospital. The guard is in stable condition at Hermann Hospital. 1/19

Leslie Havard, 22, was shot in the back of the head in the 300 block of West Baker and died later in Hermann Hospital. Torrez "Tyrone" Dirden, 25, shot in the mouth, was in critical condition there. Police believe they know who did the shooting. Update: Ardie Bernard Brooks, 27, surrendered and has been charged with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend. 1/20

Wesley Perkins, 48, was shot in the arm by an employee he had just fired Wednesday. Perkins was in good condition at Ben Taub Hospital. 1/22

One robber was killed and another injured while trying to rob the Genji Japanese Seafood Restaurant in the 2600 block of Fondren. Hyun Kim, a customer and friend of the restaurant owner, used the gun behind the bar to shoot at the robbers. Tommy Tang Ku, 19, and Robert Wang, 25, were arrested. 1/24

Pedro Vasquez, 19, was shot in the head and chest as he was driving in the 8500 block of Bellaire Blvd. He died later at Ben Taub Hospital. Juan Ibanez, 16, in the car with Vasquez, was also taken to Ben Taub with injuries to both feet. He is in fair condition. Police have not determined a motive for the attack. 2/1

Pablo Cruz Sosa, 28, is accused of shooting and killing his drinking partner, Jose Escobar. The shooting occurred in the 1300 block of Gessner. Police are looking for Sosa. 2/3

Saul Hernandez, 34, was shot to death by several men who tried to break into his northwest Harris County trailer home. Men in a white Cadillac forced their way into the home in the 12700 block of Treichel. The couple’s five children escaped through a back door. 2/4

Patrick "Fat Pat" Hawkins, 27, was shot once in the head at the Meadows Southwest Apartments, 10440 South Drive. He had gone there to collect money from a promoter for a recent performance of his rap music. Police are looking for Kenneth Eric Watson , 24, who is accused of the murder. 2/4

Maria Martinez, 21, was shot to death when she confronted her sister’s ex-boyfriend and his friend outside the sister’s home. One of the men turned himself in later. 2/5

Ricky Dwayne Flowers, 27, was shot to death as he and other suspects tried to force their way into a house in the 5900 block of Gardendale in northwest Houston. Police suspect that drugs were sold at the house. 2/11

Richard Phill, 27, shot and wounded two people then killed himself at the Home Depot on Tomball Parkway. He shot his ex-girlfriend who worked at Home Depot, Haroldletta Simien, 22, and Deputy Constable David Martin, 56. Phill came into Home Depot and saw that the Constable was wearing a gun, so shot him first. Phill and Simien had quit dating a year ago, but Phill continued to stalk her. 2/12

Efrain Romero Majano, 27, has been positively identified as the man who shot and killed two men during a confrontation. Majano is a security guard, but was not on duty at the time of the shootings. He and his girlfriend were arguing in the parking lot of a club in the 7600 block of Dashwood when a man in a van said something to Majano. Majano then shot and killed Rafael Vega Salinas, 21, and Fernando V. Valdivia, 33. Police are looking for Majano. 2/12

Juan Garcia, 27, was shot and seriously wounded by shots fired from a passing car. He was a security guard for the Lambada Club, 14400 South Main. He was shot in the head as he stood in the doorway. 2/12

A man and a 12-year-old boy were wounded in an apparent drive-by shooting in the 5400 block of Rand in northeast Houston. 2/14

Benjamin Garza, 22, was shot to death during a home invasion in northeast Houston. Garza’s brother, Anthony, was wounded and is in fair condition at Ben Taub Hospital. 2/17

A woman says she shot and killed a man who threatened to kill her. Police found the body of Tony Moore, 33, at a residence in the 14800 block of Sweney. The woman told police that she and Moore had an argument and he had pointed a rifle at her. 2/19

South Houston police are trying to identify a man found in a car trunk, apparently shot to death. 2/20

Keith Michael St. Aubin, 19, has been charged with killing one Mardi Gras reveler and injuring four others in a spray of gunfire that sent hundreds running for cover on a crowded street in Galveston. St. Aubin, from Houston, is charged with murder in the death of Oscar Manuel Nava, 19, of Houston. He is also charged with attempted capital murder in the wounding of Luis Carlos Martinez, Juan Antonio Garcia Jr., 20, Christina Lisa Gonzalez, 16, and Michael Alejandro Lopez, 14. 2/22

Chris Michael McDonald, 19, shot and killed himself after he was involved in a botched attempt to murder his friend’s grandmother for the alleged promise of getting her $900 stereo. 2/

An unidentified man was found fatally shot in the throat in the 1400 block of Patterson near downtown Houston. He died at Ben Taub Hospital. 2/27

Jesus Martinez, 40, was shot to death at his southeast Houston home in the 7700 block of Keller. 2/27

Eunice Albines, 22, was shot and killed at a northwest Houston nightclub by a customer who grabbed a gun from behind the bar and shot her, then himself. The man said they would both have to die if she did not love him. He is in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital. 2/28

A Metro bus driver was shot in the leg after an argument with a rider. Witnesses said the driver and the passenger had words as the passenger stepped off the bus. The passenger went to his car, got a pistol, and shot the driver. The driver was taken by Life Flight to Hermann Hospital. 2/28

Frederick Johnson, 42, sustained multiple gunshot wounds and Mary Guillory, 51, was shot in the hand. Witnesses saw Johnson and Guillory struggling in a car near the Southwest Freeway and Wilcrest. After Guillory was escorted from the car, Johnson shot himself in the chest. Johnson is in critical condition at Ben Taub Hospital. 3/2

Gilberto Carbajal Guadarrama, 33, of Controe what shot four times with a 9 mm pistol as he fought with two men near his pickup truck. His death may have resulted from a family feud. 3/3

Sandy Spinks, 19, was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt as she was leaving Wal-Mart in the 13700 block of East Freeway. Spinks was seriously wounded and taken by Life Flight to Hermann Hospital. 3/5

William Kemp, 38, was shot at a residence in the 1300 block of Stroker. The homeowner found a man inside a garage apartment at his home. He pulled a pistol on the burglar and called 911. The burglar charged at him and he shot the burglar to death. 3/23

Walter Kyle Berry, Jr., 32, was shot and killed as he talked on a pay phone at a car wash in the 2000 block of North Shepherd. Berry was associate pastor of McGee Chapel Missionary Baptist Church and he conducted a religious talk show on a radio station. He was shot by Thomas Palermo, 59, a part-time security guard at the car wash. Palermo was impatient because Berry was talking on a pay phone Palermo considered his. 3/23

Tom Matthews, 60, is accused of shooting his stepson to death during a drunken dispute over tools. William David Allen, 37, was an offshore worker staying at the family's trailer house when not at work. 3/23

An intruder was shot to death when he kicked in a door to a house in the 800 block of Wateka. 3/25

Auturo Maldonado, 23, was shot to death in an apartment in the 5400 block of Rampart. Maldonado had argued with his 16-year-old niece's boyfriend. Then the boyfriend's brother arrived and began arguing with Maldonado and shot Maldonado. 3/30

Marc Daniel Kajs, 28, was shot to death by his lover, Ilhan Yazmin killed Marc, then shot himself with a .25 caliber pistol. The shooting took place in the 3300 block of Montrose Blvd at the Urbana Restaurant. Yazmin had threatened to kill his former lover several times. 3/30

Eulalio Perez, 23, was shot to death and his friend Orlando Nava, 19, was shot in the check and back. Nava had parked in the driveway of Perez's neighbor. Nava and the neighbor aruged and the negihborh pulled a gun and shot the two men. 3/31

Juan Pedro Ramirez, 19, of the 10200 block of Harwin, was shot to death as his sat in his car talking to friends at a basketball court in the 5100 block of Lipan. 3/31

Ignacio Ponce, 50, has been arrested for the shooting death of Eulalio Perez, 23, and the wounding of Orlando Nava, 19. The shootings resulted from an argument over Nava’s parking in Ponce’s driveway. (4/1/98)

A Harris County reserve deputy, Margarita Aguilar, 29, was shot and wounded with her own 9 mm handgun by her estranged boyfriend, John Garcia Soza, 27, who then wounded himself.Aguilar is in stable condition and Soza is in critical condition with a self-inflicted head wound. (4/4/98)

Kelvin Dewayne McDowell, 25, was shot and killed when he refused a Houston police officer’s orders to drop his weapon. McDowell and another man were firing weapons during a party at a southwest Houston apartment Friday morning. Two children were in the apartment, but did not witness the shooting (4/4/98)

David Lane Fox, 44, and friends were drinking at a residence when a 9 mm handgun discharged accidentally and killed Fox. (4/11/98)

Young people fleeing an altercation at a nightclub were fired on by passengers of a pursuing car. Quan Thai, 19, was fatally wounded and seven others were wounded. (4/12/98)

A Houston man was apparently the victim of a retaliatory attack stemming from a fight earlier in the week. (4/14/98)

A 6-year old girl was critically wounded during a shootout between her stepfather and two would-be robbers in the family garage. The family arrived at their home when two armed men came into the garage and demanded money and jewelry. Neighbors heard at least nine shots, three of which hit the girl, one in the face. One of the intruders, 26, was shot and killed. (4/14/98)

Ana Peterkin, 43, shot her sons with a shotgun as they slept, probably after drugging them. She then killed herself with the same gun. Friends indicated that Ms. Peterkin had repeatedly threatened to harm herself or her two sons and reportedly had been despondent after her 1993 divorce. She was active in Houston’s arts community. Police are looking for a man they say hunted down and killed the 22-year-old mother of his three children. Deborah Flowers was shot in the chest and back and died at the scene. A female cousin, Flowers’ three children and two other children locked themselves in a bathroom to hide. Flowers tried to hide in the back bedroom, where she was shot along with her grandfather, who was wounded in the hand. (4/18/98).

A Houston Chronicle reporter Robert Henderson, 59, was shot in the face in the garage of his home. He was working on his vehicle when he was confronted by two young men. Henderson was shot after he refused to surrender his watch. He is in fair condition (4/18/98).

Amado Murillo, 26, of Rosenberg was shot and killed by a gunman using a .380-caliber pistol at 2:15 a.m. Murillo was getting out of his vehicle in the driveway of his home when he was shot several times in the stomach (4/19/98).

Humble police shot and killed one of at least three ski-masked men who held several Home Depot employees at gunpoint. Gunmen forced their way into the store around 5 a.m. and herded employees into a break room. Two employees were able to call 911; a patrolman arrived within one minute of the call. (4/19/98)

A man and woman were shot to death inside the back office of an auto repair shop. Police suspect the shootings may be drug related. (4/20/98)

Korey Lavale Rawls, 24, was shot and killed by a Houston police officer during a drug raid in southeast Houston. A second suspect, Aldo Alaniz, 20, is in serious condition with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. (4/25/98)

Police in Sugar Land are investigating the slaying of Abdullah Meer Mayel, 30, who was found shot in the street. Several 9 mm shell casings and live rounds were found at the scene (4/26/98).

Juan Saldana, 55, who was paralyzed by a drive-by shooting two months ago, was shot and killed in his Richmond home. (4/26/98)

Jose Manuel Alanis, 23, was slain when he went to see his ex-girlfriend’s children, who were being kept by a baby sitter. Alanis assaulted the baby- sitter and her husband, who pointed a rifle at Alanis and asked him to leave. Alanis was shot when he grabbed the gun barrel. (4/28/98)

Police are looking for Quincy Lamont Wilson, 20, who has been charged with fatally shooting Deidra Clark, 15, during an argument. (4/29/98)

An unidentified man who had been shot to death was found in the brush along the South Freeway. (4/29/98)

Tanya Marie Myers, 27, died as she returned home at 1:30 a.m. along the Gulf Freeway from work at the post office. Multiple gun shots were found in the driver's side of the car when it was discovered stopped on an access road. Motive for the shooting and who is responsible are unknown. 4/98.

David Gallegos, 17, accidentally shot his friend Aaron Ray Turner, 20, while showing him his new gun. The incident was initially reported as a suicide. 5 /98.

A man turned himself in to the police after shooting and seriously wounding his 21-year old girlfriend, Denise Hayslip, and fatally shooting the man Darren Cain, 30, whom she was with. 5 /98.

Alexander Martinez, 27, was fatally shot while trying to stop a car thief in the parking lot of his apartment complex. He had just returned home at 2:45 a.m. after working as a security guard at a local restaurant. 5/98.

Richard Young, a 72-man despondent man threatening to kill himself over failing health, was shot to death at the door of his home when he raised and aimed a 12-gauge shotgun at a special weapons and tactics team that had been called in on a report of an armed man by frightened neighbors. 5/98.

Witnesses heard 9 shots and saw a trio of two men an a womam run from an office in a northwest Houston business, where police found the body of one dead male victim and the wounded one of another. Names were not released at the time of the report. 5/98.

Eulogio Acosta, 39, shot and killed his younger brother Armando Acosta, 28, during an argument that was described as an ongoing dispute between the two. A sister Sonsuelo, 36, was shot in the wrist. 5/98.

An 83-year old man, Gladwin Rogers, shot and killed his ailing wife Morene, 81, then committed suicide. Rogers was reported to have expressed concern about who would care for his wife should he become sick or die. The couple had no family. 5/98.

A woman, 50, killed her common-law husband Larrie Penrice, 46, because he was punching her in the face and stomach as she drove her car. 5/98.

Timothy Jackson, 29, and Leonard Walker, 29, were killed by a third acquaintance during an argument involving the three. A man known as Albert was seen leaving the Houston ice house where the crime took place. 5/98

Raul Uribe, 41, fired shots into the departing truck of Cipriano Sanchez, 26, killing him after an argument between the two men. 5/98.

Mark Thomas, 26, was shot and killed by three men as he drove into the parking lot of a convenience store to meet a friend Carlos Martinez. Martinez had just been shot in the foot by the three who were attempting to steal his car when Thomas entered the parking lot. 5/98.

Keith Boston, 22, was shot and killed with a shotgun by the neighbor of a girl whose home he was trying to solicit pressure-washing business from. Boston had been mistaken for an intruder by the girl. (The 18-year old girl, who was at home alone, called her 36-year old neighbor when Boston looked in her window and frightened her. Boston and his brother were pressure-washing houses in the neighborhood where the shooting took place.) 5/98.

Donny Galvan, 14, was shot in the eye with a BB gun by another youth as Galvan drove his go-cart down the street. The incidence occurred just minutes after the same youth had shot another youth in the leg. 5/98.

Lupe Garcia, 65, was shot once in the head by Joel Escobedo, 36, as Garcia waited at a bus stop in east Houston. 5/98.

Kathyanna Nguyen, 49, the longtime owner of a northeast Houston convenience store, was fatally shot in the head during an attempted robbery. Julian Gutierrez, a customer, was shot in the shoulder. 5 /98.

The 2-month long disagreement between Nickolas Jaramillo, 22, and Michael Nebeling, 17, lead to the shooting death of Jaramillo by Nebeling, who fled the scene. 5/98.

Victor Valencia, 30, was fatally shot as he and an unknown man, who was seriously injured, worked on a car in the parking lot of a southeast Houston apartment complex. 5/98.

Margarito Resendez was fatally shot by Alexander Andrade, 21, who struck Resendez’s car with his car as both men were exiting the parking lot of a club in southwest Houston. Andrade was fighting with his girlfriend, who he was forcing into the car, when Resendez entered the lot to leave. 5/98.

Eric Comer, 18, was fatally shot and stuffed into the truck of a car by John Green, 29, and his cousin Christopher Green, 17, in what appeared to be a drug-related incident. The body was found later in a northeast carwash. 5/98.

Jaime Anderson, 15, was shot below the knee at school when a gun in the backpack of a classmate fired accidentally. 5/98.

Kenneth Wilburn, 59, shot and killed Wayne Blackwell, 52, and seriously wounded his wife Edith Wilburn, 39, in an apartment in Channelview near Houston. 5/98.

Police Sgt. Kent Kincaid, 40, a 13-year veteran of the Houston police department was shot and killed in front of his wife near his home when Kincaid tried to question a motorist who had thrown something at his windshield. 5/98.

In what appeared to be a murder suicide Juan Medina, 18, killed Ernestina Delgado, 18. Their bodies were found in a car in southeast Houston. 5/98.

A policeman, who had been with the police department for 6 years, and was divorced from his wife, was found shot to death in what appeared to be a suicide. He was discovered in his Clear Lake apartment by a nephew who lived with him. He was the father of two children. 5/98.

Aaron Curl, 39, of Magnolia was shot to death during an argument in his apartment. Police are looking for Ricky Cole, 20, who was seen leaving the scene. 5 /8.

Gabriel Segueda, 24, was shot and killed as he and a date returned to his home. Two men forced the two to enter the house and to lie down while they ransacked the house. Upon leaving the two shot Sigueda and fled, leaving his companion unharmed. 5/98.
